Most beautiful villages of Magdalena to visit in the department and close to Santa Marta

The department of Magdalena is located in the northern part of Colombia, it is famous for its cultural and historical relics, its beaches, the swamp, and especially its natural parks near the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Most of the towns are located in the central area of the department, but Santa Marta, the most important city, is located in the extreme north with access to the Caribbean Sea and close to the Tayrona National Natural Park. Magdalena is located in the Colombian Caribbean region where its predominant climate has a temperature between 23 °C and 35 °C; It has two rainy seasons, the first in the part of April and May, the second between September and November. The department offers innumerable tourist attractions from the natural and historical point of view, ranging from the Colombian Caribbean coastline with its beaches and beautiful bays to the beautiful landscapes of the Sierra Nevada.

The importance of tourism in Magdalena lies in the fact that most of the Sierra Nevada, the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Tayrona, and Ciudad Perdida are located in its territory, an archaeological site belonging to the ancient Tayrona indigenous civilization. Santa Marta

The first thing you should know about Magdalena is its capital, Santa Marta. It is one of the most tourist cities in Colombia due to its colonial architecture, its beautiful coastal beaches, and its historical sites. Santa Marta is a destination with hot and windy weather, it is also the closest point to the natural attractions of the Department

If you plan to take a tour of the magical towns of Magdalena, this destination is a very good point of arrival since it has its airport.

Ciénaga

Ciénaga is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Magdalena and is also part of the Colombian heritage town network. It is located south of Santa Marta, at a distance of 32 kilometers and if you plan to go by bus it can take about 45 minutes to get there. The town of Ciénaga is also famous for having inspired one of the great literary masterpieces by Gabriel García Márquez, which is why it is known as the world capital of magical realism.

If you go to traveling to Ciénaga something you should do is visit its main streets and get to know the great houses of the colonial era such as the Masonic Lodge, the Devil's House, the Temple and the San Juan Bautista Church.

Finally, spend a morning going to the Costa Verde Spa, to see beautiful landscapes such as the mouth of the river where the Córdoba River flows into, the Ciénaga Grande, and the numerous pipes.

Aracataca

Aracataca was the town where Gabriel García Márquez was born. It is a town full of history, yellow butterflies, and magical realism. The main tourist sites in Aracataca are the Gabriel García Márquez House Museum and the house where García Márquez's father worked, also called the House of the Telegraphist, which served as an inspiration to writing 'Love in the Times of Cholera'.

Taganga

Taganga is a picturesque fishing village. It is very famous for its long beach, the tranquility of its bay, and its native fishermen, since on the beach there are fishing canoes that at specific times carry out their fishing ritual using the cast net.

Taganga is a town that you can visit for a weekend if you are staying in Santa Marta since it is only a 20-minute drive away.

Minca

Minca is a small town in the department of Magdalena and just outside of Santa Marta. It is a very visited tourist destination in Colombia due to the different natural attractions around it because it is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

To get to Minca you can do it from the historic center of Santa Marta and some of the things you can do in the town are to visit the Marinka Waterfalls, Pozo Azul, the Coffee Farm and rest in giant hammocks.

Nueva Granada

Nueva Granada is a town full of landscapes and many traditions. Some of these are the "Santa Rosa de Lima" festival in August or the Corralejas festival.
