How to get to Cerro de la Popa in Cartagena and schedules

The Cerro de la Popa is the highest point in Cartagena de Indias, from its top you have a panoramic view of the entire city, the Caribbean Sea, and the island of Tierrabomba. On the hill, there is also a convent that bears the same name. It is best to visit the hill after visiting the Castillo de San Felipe because they are very close.

The best alternative to get to Cerro de la Popa is to hire a taxi, which will wait for you on your visit and return you in it. If you get into a taxi from the Castillo de San Felipe, the fare for the ride is 8,000 Colombian pesos (2 dollars). The journey up the hill and through the convent takes 40 to 60 minutes, so you can pay the taxi driver for a fee of 16,000 Colombian pesos (4 dollars) and then ask him to take you to your hotel, which if it is in the Bocagrande area can cost you 12,000 Colombian pesos (3 dollars).

We recommend this option because at the top of the hill it is very difficult to find transportation, although there are people on motorcycles who take you up and down the hill, it is not recommended transportation due to its insecurity and because this area has little traffic. Another option is to request transportation through applications, but if you go to the hill at the end of the afternoon, it may be difficult for you to find a vehicle and you will end up walking back.

Although they say that El Convento de la Popa is one of the most popular tourist visits in Cartagena de Indias, within it your visit is quick, around 30 minutes. But what is worth it are the views of the city that you get from Cerro de la Popa, from this point of the mountain you can see the Walled City, the Clock Tower, the San Felipe Castle, the Bocagrande hotels, the beaches of the coast of Cartagena and some famous towns.

If you are going to visit the convent, keep in mind that the entrance fee is 11,000 Colombian pesos and 8,000 Colombian pesos for children. The hours from Monday to Sunday are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Lastly, we recommend negotiating with the taxi driver before getting in, and remember to include him waiting for you during your visit. A price that they may suggest for doing the tour is 50,000 Colombian pesos (13 dollars) but it is still high, negotiate it at 35,000 Colombian pesos (9.2 dollars) until they accept.
