Las Bóvedas is a Spanish military building built in 1798 and considered the last colonial work in the city. Its structure consists of 47 semicircular arches, 23 barrel vaults, and a triangular pediment in which the coat of arms of Spain is carved in marble.
Throughout the year Las Bóvedas has received different uses. Initially, it functioned as a military barracks where ammunition was kept to defend the city from pirates or other armies. Later, during the War of Independence, it was used as a prison where patriots were kept as prisoners, later it became an ammunition depot and in the last century it served the liquor industry in the region.
Currently, from the cells of an old 18th-century dungeon, shops were adapted to sell souvenirs typical of the city, turning it into the most varied handicrafts market in Cartagena. It is an ideal place to walk and take a souvenir of this magical city, there are very original author crafts, the prices are competitive, discounts apply for the most expensive crafts and as a good local trade, you can negotiate the price. You will also find art galleries and bars.
To get to the Plaza de las Bóvedas from the Clock Tower in Cartagena, you must walk along Carrera 7 northbound until the end of it when you come across the House of Gabriel García Márquez. There you walk two blocks north along Carrera 2 and you will be able to see the arches of the Plaza de las Bóvedas. Carrera 7th is the first street you see when you enter through the tower, the distance is less than 1 kilometer, so you will get there in about 10 minutes of walking.
