La Caimanera is in the southern part of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, located in the center between the distance that separates the municipalities of Tolú and Coveñas. Visiting this natural reserve is a plan to do as a family, where you canoe through the lagoon, the pipes, and the mangroves while a local guide tells you traditional stories from the coast. Although if you prefer to do it on your own, you can also tour the swamp by kayak.
During the tour of the ecosystem, you can observe great biodiversity with a variety of birds, species typical of mangroves, and alligators, which is the name of La Caimanera due to its presence. It is a place with a beautiful landscape, the canoe ride is very calm and is done in several routes through small freshwater swamps on the banks of the river.
In the center of the swamp, there is a houseboat where you can try freshly caught clams, rest for a moment, and go swimming in the water. During the tour of the Ciénaga de la Caimanera, they also take you through the ecological reserve to see the alligators, turtles, and parrots that are being rehabilitated to later release into the habitat. The reserve is one of the tourist attractions of the destination and to enter you have to contribute 10,000 Colombian pesos (3 dollars) which are normally not included in the value of the tour.
To get to the Ciénaga La Caimanera you do it utilizing a boat from the Coveñas pier. Although from the Troncal del Caribe you can see the mouth of the swamp, the only access is from Coveñas. Some routes leave in the early hours of the morning and the middle of the afternoon.
In Coveñas some agencies sell tours to the swamp where they pick you up at the hotel and take you to the port to then take you on a boat tour. The price can vary between $15,000 to 30,000 Colombian pesos per person (it would be between $5 and 10 dollars). The duration of the tour through the Ciénaga La Caimanera is approximately 3 hours.
