How to get to Monguí from Bogotá or Tunja: Fares, tickets, and highway tolls

Monguí is a colonial town in the department of Boyacá that is part of the heritage towns of Colombia. It is located 97 kilometers from Tunja, 40 minutes from Sogamoso, and 4 hours from Bogotá.

To get to Monguí from Bogotá you must first take a bus bound for Sogamoso at the Salitre terminal in the north. This has a cost of $30,000 and the journey takes 3 hours and 20 minutes. Then from Sogamoso you must get on a bus that goes to Monguí where the value of the ticket is $5,000 and it takes you 40 minutes to arrive.

To get to Monguí by bus from Tunja you must first go to Sogamoso where the bus takes 1 hour and 30 minutes each way and costs 8,000 Colombian pesos (2 dollars). In Sogamoso buses leave for Monguí every 15 minutes from the transport terminal, the company in charge is Copetran.

If you are going to travel by car to get to Monguí, you will have to drive a distance of 223 kilometers and you will come across 5 tolls that add up to a total value of $31,500 (8.2 dollars). You must leave Bogotá by the north highway to reach the Bogotá – Tunja highway.

Once you arrive in Monguí, begin to walk its streets, as you walk you will be dazzled by its Spanish colonial architecture from the 16th century, which is what makes it one of the most beautiful towns in Colombia. Some places that you must visit in the town to appreciate its architecture are the Plaza Mayor, the Basilica of Our Lady of Monguí, and the Calicanto Bridge.

The inhabitants of Monguí strive to maintain their customs and expose them to the tourist with pride; one of them is the habit of wearing a ruana daily because the weather in Monguí is cold and if you want to buy one there are kiosks with a wide variety of them. Another characteristic custom of the towns in the business of manufacturing balls, currently there are more than 20 factories that make soccer balls and export them to all of South America.

There is an obligatory place that you must visit in Monguí and allocate a day to do it; visit the Páramo de Ocetá, a beautiful ecosystem that you can walk to from the town. It is 4 hours from the central square and on the way, you will find the Black Lagoon, the Stone City, the Twin Towers, the Cerro de Las Águilas, El Barco, fragile ones, and hundreds of daisies.
