Manizales Mariquita Aerial Cable Tower: History, Telephone, Hours, and Location

The old Station of the Aerial Cable is part of the historical heritage of Manizales. Formerly it was a cable line that communicated Manizales with the municipalities of Mariquita and Honda located in the department of Tolima. The aerial cable served to exchange products between municipalities and was at the time the largest cable line in the world.

The cable system was based on metal or wooden towers that were reached by steel cable lines with small cubicles to transport people or products. In Manizales, the main station was built in the wood where, on the one hand, export merchandise was received and on the other, it was sent to the city.

As for its history, at the beginning of 1900 the growth of the coffee market made Manizales become one of the most important cities in Colombia, being the center of commerce for the entire coffee axis but its location in the middle of the mountains was a big problem for the transport of merchandise between municipalities, that is why they began to look for transport solutions, giving rise to the railway and the aerial cable.

The system stopped working in 1968 after the roads were improved. Since 1969 it was suitable as the headquarters of the School of Architecture of the National University of Colombia, until today.

How to get to the old Station of the Aerial Cable?

To visit the old station of the aerial cable you must go to the facilities of the National University of Manizales, specifically to the Faculty of Architecture, where the entrance is located at Carrera 23 with Calle 65. It is located three blocks away from the Palogrande stadium.

Manizales Cable Tower

In front of the old station is also the Torre de Herveo or Torre del Cable. It is a supporting wooden structure that served as the transport and cargo system to extend the aerial cable between Manizales and Mariquita. It was originally located in the municipality of Herveo Tolima, from which it takes its name, and was later transferred to Manizales.

Currently, the Torre de Herveo and the old station are part of the history of Manizales, which is why it is one of the tourist sites to visit. For special dates, the tower is illuminated to give value to the monument.

The timetable to get to know the station is subject to the university timetables, but the Torre de Herveo timetable is 24 hours as it is located on public roads.
